Denise Menchaca, President

Denise was elected to City Council in March of 2017 and re-elected in November 2022. She enjoys the distinction of being the first Latina elected to the Council as well as serving as the first Latina Mayor. She was raised in Alhambra, attended the University of Southern California, and married with four adult children.

Carina Rivera, Vice President

As a single mother and successful business operator, Carina has a unique perspective of the working class and understands the needs of the underserved and underrepresented members of the community. As a former Councilmember for the City of San Gabriel, her priorities for the community continue to include fostering participation and maintaining safety.

John Buehler, Treasurer

John was born in Spokane, Washington.  He was raised in Pennsylvania and New Mexico. After graduating from the University of New Mexico with a Bachelor of Science degree in Astrophysics, John moved to Oregon and then to California. For almost 30 years, he worked as an Advertising Executive for the Yellow Pages.

Amy Mendez, Secretary

Amy was born in Guatemala City.  She was educated in Guatemala’s public school system. Encouraged by her church and pastor, she followed her call into ministry. Mendez is now a member of San Gabriel Presbytery, and serves as a part-time Site Pastor at West Covina Community Presbyterian Fellowship, moderating the Session at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in Claremont.

Raymond Barrera, Boardmember

Raymond has 25 years of experience representing public entities in civil litigation, administrative and transactional matters involving Construction Breach of Contract, Eminent Domain, Inverse Condemnation, and dangerous condition matters. Successfully defended clients in judge and jury trials in Construction, Eminent Domain, Inverse Condemnation, and Tort actions.

Lauren Lizárraga Gray, Boardmember
Lauren is responsible for the operational management and administration of the TELACU Education Foundation. She oversees a team that directly implements the Foundation’s College Success Program, Health Careers Program, and three federally-funded TRiO Programs – Upward Bound, Talent Search and Veterans Upward Bound. These five Programs collectively serve 2,000 high school, college and nursing students, and veterans.
Gilbert Magaña, Boardmember

Gilbert began his career in law enforcement with the San Gabriel Police Department in 2015. From 2016-2022, Officer Magaña has held a variety of significant roles in the department:  Police Explorer Advisor, Bicycle Response Team member, first ever position of a Mental Health Evaluation Team (MET) Officer, Investigations Bureau member working on crimes against persons, Use of Force Instructor and newly developed Peer Support Team member. Officer Magaña was elected as the President for the San Gabriel Police Officers’ Association from 2017-2020.

Grant Paules, Boardmember

Grant is the dynamic owner and operator of The Property Advisors Inc., a thriving real estate brokerage that excels in both residential and commercial markets. He skillfully represents buyers and sellers, ensuring smooth transactions. Beyond brokering deals, his firm manages over 400 units, from single-family homes to commercial centers, condos, and apartment buildings, spanning from Pasadena to Santa Monica. Grant leads a highly effective team that handles everything from general maintenance and complete renovations to tenant relations, leasing, and daily operations. His hands-on approach and keen attention to detail allow property owners to fully enjoy the benefits of ownership, while his firm takes care of the rest.

Elizabeth Ramirez, Boardmember

Elizabeth Ramirez has over 15 years of experience in government advocacy and strategic community outreach. Currently, she serves as Vice President of Government Affairs for Athens Services, a Southern California based recycling and solid waste hauling company. She works regularly with elected officials, staff members and many community leaders to resolve various complex environmental issues.

Jane Vasquez, Boardmember

Jane holds a B.A. from Washington University in St. Louis, and M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of New Mexico, and a Certificado de estudios hispánicos from the University of Madrid, Spain.  Jane worked as a bilingual teacher and in curriculum development in New Mexico. She has taught in universities, seminaries and institutes in California and New Mexico.  Her research interest is the Spanish Reformation of the 16th c and she is the author of La Biblia en español: Cómo nos to llegó, El Centenarios de la Palabra and Hispanic Presbyterians in Southern California.

Julietta Perez, Executive Director
Julietta has a B.A.in Psychology from U.C. Davis and an M.A. in Psychology from Chico State University. With over 20 years experience of managing non profits and serving on boards. Julietta is an advocate for social enterprise and diversity, coordinating key projects and mobilizing teams to power organizational performance. She enjoys working at La Casa de San Gabriel because every day is challenging but so rewarding.  La Casa educates, feeds, and assists San Gabriel families daily.
